Sideline Support
From Pressure to Presence
This program is designed to help parents navigate the real challenges of youth sports with practical tools to move from pressure to presence - strengthening family connection even in the middle of competitive season. Each week includes actionable strategies you can use to support your athlete and build stronger relationships through sports.

Week 01
From Pressure to Presence
Being Your Child’s Biggest Fan
THE FOCUS:
Moving from sideline pressure to supportive presence
THE CHALLENGE:
3 simple shifts - Set the tone, cheer for effort, and let them lead the conversation after the game.
Pressure says: "You need to..."
Presence says: "I love watching you play."

CONNECTION TOOL:
Before the Game:
“Are you excited about playing today?”
“Is there anything you’re nervous about?” (then just listen)
From the Sidelines:
“Nice hustle!”
“Way to work hard!”

After the Game (in the car):
“What’s one thing you loved about playing tonight?”
“Did you have fun?”

The Sideline Influence
How Parents Shape the Game

THE FOCUS:
How kids watch and learn from our behavior - modeling positive sportsmanship and self-awareness

THE CHALLENGE:
Build awareness and model positive characteristics you want to see your child doing

CONNECTION TOOL:
Model one behavior you want to see in your athlete (ex: staying calm after a bad call, encouraging effort, or showing respect to refs/coaches/players).

Then, notice something positive your athlete did during the game and connect on that after the game.

Week 03
The Post-Game Car Ride
What to say and what not to say
THE FOCUS:
Healthy communication after wins AND losses

THE CHALLENGE:
The 3:1 Rule - For every 1 comment about the game, make 3 positive comments about something else

CONNECTION TOOL:
Tonight, try the 3:1 rule. Let THEM bring up basketball if they want to
This simple rule helps you:
+ Give your child space to process on their own timeline
+ Keep sports in healthy perspective
+ Maintain connection even after tough games
+ Let THEM lead the conversation about the game (if they want to)
+ Reduce post-game conflict and tension

REMEMBER...
The goal isn't perfection.
We, as parents, don't have to fix every game, analyze every play, or solve every problem. They need you to be their safe place to land - win or lose.
The post-game car ride is about connection.

THE CHALLENGE:
Share a story with your child about a time you failed and what you learned

CONNECTION TOOL:
This week, share a story with your child about a time you failed at something and what you learned. Show them resilience is real

REMEMBER...
Our kids don’t need perfect parents. They need parents who show up, admit mistakes, and keep trying.
